Betta Fish is native freshwater fish from Thailand and Cambodia. They live in warm, still ponds, swamps and rice paddies of South east Asia. Among the leaves and branches of the dense undergrowth, these these fish hunt for small insects and larvae. So if you can provide them bigger tank than a small fish bowl they gonna love it. Also they like pants and caves. 10 Gallon bowl or tank would be best for them than a tiny 1-2 gallon fish bowl. Also they will live longer.

Being an Anabantids, Bettas have a labyrinth organ in their heads that allows them to take oxygen directly from the atmosphere in addition to the oxygen taken from water via their gills which allows them to cope with the dry season in their monsoonal climate home. But remember they need air to breath mainly. Also Betta fish don't like tall tanks.

Compatible tank mates for Betta fish are Tetras, Danios, Angelfish, Livebearers, Rasboras, Loaches, Plecos, and Small Catfish. They don't grow bigger than 3-4 inches so don't try to keep them fish who grow bigger. Better keep only one male per tank If you want a peaceful tank with your Betta to have all his pretty tails intact.
