Long before I had bought my first ever fish I have seen these Indian Glassy fish in a childrens fish book. I was fascinated by these fish which has a glass like transparent bodies. It took me 19 years to find these delicate glass like fish. Unfortunately they didn't last more than 4 days in my quarantine tank. My both pairs of Indian Glassy fish died from Ich which is also known as whites spot.
These Glassy fish are native to an area of south Asia from Pakistan to Malaysia. this fish a striking transparent body revealing its bones and internal organs; the male develops a dark edge to the dorsal fin. The fish grows to a maximum overall length of 3.1 inches. They are also known as the Indian glassfish, Indian glass perch, and Siamese glassfish. These fish can be shy when kept in too small a group (fewer than five individuals) but when more fish are kept, they become bold and outgoing, making interesting additions to the community tank. They prefer to swim at the middle and lower levels of the tank, and will take most small live and frozen foods. In general, they tend not to eat dried foods. Yes I noticed it. They refused to eat pellet food. Even at pet shot they looked soo thin probably coz hadn't eaten for very long time.
Indian glassy fish sold to hobbyists have often been "painted", which involves injecting colored dye into the fish's transparent tissue to make them more attractive. They are also know as Disco fish. They might look pretty but this is not good at all for the fish. Also its not permanent, and usually fades away in six to nine months. Fish thus treated have suffered trauma and are susceptible to disease, including ich, fin rot and the viral disease Lymphocystis.
This is what happened to my fish. They were painted fish and I think that's the reason they got infected by Ich. Also they were weaken by not eating anything. The end result was having dead fish. So if you ever find colorful glassy fish at a pet shop better think before buy. Also check if they eat. If they don't eat again it would be useless buying them.
