Sexing German Blue Rams

German Blue Rams are my favorite type of Cichlid fish. It's really important knowing how to sex them unless you are buying half dozen or so. I bought a pair and later realized both of those Rams are females. They both died within two weeks. Another thing is German Blue Rams are very sensitive to everything just like Discus fish. You must have perfect tank conditions for them or they won't last long.

They do like densely planted tanks water temperature around 25c - 28c. Also they do need clean water so aquarium filtration is a must. Make sure you have a correct pair or males and female or school of them. They live peacefully with other fish though. Germans Rams are even recomanded for planted Discus fish tanks since they are not usually aggressive towards other types of fish. But they can be aggresive to for their own type and can get very protective when they have a fry.

When you are sexing German Blue Rams there are several important things to consider. Females have a red or pink color spread in their belly area and you can't see this in males. Also males have no blue sheen inside the big black spot on their bodies.Sometimes males have blue strip on pelvic fin but females always have black. Unless you are buying from a breeder where you can insist on giving you a male and a female you must check these things carefully.

They can be shy and might prefer to stay hidden from view but if you have some passive dither fish like Neon Tetra or Cardinal Tetra you can get them to swim in open areas too. Also you can keep them with almost all types of fish except large or aggressive fish.Bolivian Rams  and Electric Blue Rams are another two perfect tankmates.

German Blue Rams need proper care just like Discus fish. So they might not be perfect beginner fish. It's better you learn more about this type and Cichlid fish family before buying them. These days you can find all info from internet or you can buy a nice book and read it. I really do love reading colorful books about fish keeping and books always beat computer. Not a big fan of e-books either. Anyway Here are few really good books about Keeping Cichild family fish. These books are not so expensive but if you like you can buy those hardcover books. Or most books these days have Kindle versions too.
