Oscar Fish - My Experience

Oscar fish is the Mustang among Aquarium fish. They are strong, hardy, intelligent, curious and playful. They look at everything smaller than them as food for not great for community tanks but still a great fish to keep. These guys are aggressive but smart enough to know their place in tank. They would bully anything which they can also know well how to stay out of bigger thugs. But they have a huge curiosity which get them into trouble.

They love meat and love to eat. So they always hungry. If you fed them well and keep in a big clean tank you could end up with near a foot long monster within an year !I was told they can be tamed so they could be hand feed but I haven't tried that. One good thing is these Oscar guys are not guy and they love to explore. You can find them always in front of glass if someone near the tank.

Oscar fish is not your fish if you want to have a nice tidy heavy planted tank. These guys lot make messes. They are messy eaters and also prefer to decorate the tank by them selves. You are gonna find stones and ornaments in different places than you did place them.

Finding tankmates for Oscar fish is a bit complicated thing. You can keep them as a group of 6 or more and they will get along well. There will be small short fights but you wouldn't have to bother about them. But don't put smaller less aggressive fish with them. They will bully them for ever if they can't eat those smaller fish. This might not same for always. You might find a peaceful Oscar like 1 for 10,000 Also Once I has a smaller Jewell fish who cornered 10 Oscars and kept 3/4 of tank for him self. I had never seen something like that before but still it proved that these can happen. They will be ok with cichlid kinds who can hold their own. Don't put those crayfish/minilobsters with Oscar fish. Oscar love to hunt and also to fight.

These guys get big, really big. So if you don't have plans to upgrade your tank which they get bigger then don't buy them.

They are hardy when it comes to deceases. Normally smaller oscar fish like 1 inch long can be get white spots (ich) but if you can get them cured then seldom they would have it again.

They love clean water conditions so a good filtering system and maybe an air pump would keep them in Happy mood for ever. Otherwise you will find them near surface of tank breathing hard. These powerful but not so expensive power filters would keep these guys Happy and very active and you can worry less about them.

This fish is native to South America including but not limited to countries such as Peru, Columbia and Brazil. Is prized for its tastiness !
